While looking at blood drips and splatters, I came across some evidence that the scalpel used by the "doc" in this production is indeed a blood-knife of the kind used by special effects people. It appears to have a tube attached to the side that is facing away from the camera.
I had originally spent a considerable amount of time
following the knife itself, looking for anomalies. But the anomaly in this
instance occurs in the reflection from the knife, and isn't visible on
the knife itself. The brightness and contrast in any version
of the footage make it impossible to detect.
Look at the video, any version, (except perhaps
CD-Rom versions, resolution maybe too low) carefully in the area of the
first incision made under the alien's left ear. As the doc
moves the knife down the neck from the ear to just past the chin, a reflection
is passed acrossed the left cheek. This is the reflection off the
blade of the scalpel. Look at the cheek not the scalpel. (I'll admit,
I made the mistake of watching the knife instead it's effect, the reflection,
for many hours of study.)
Some "experts" claimed this is just "film grain", so I motion stabilized that small portion to remove some of the camera movement and it clearly is not film grain. Any expert that says this has not examined this thoroughly. This dark line is the shadow of something on the knife or attached to the knife.
No medical personnel could give me a good reason for this to
be on one side of the blade. They insisted that a scalpel blade should
be smooth on both sides. SFX persons on the other hand recognized
it immediately as a tube attached to the blade.
Tube.avi (1.6MB) is the sample of stablized film in AVI format, 15fs, Cinepak compression. Again this can be seen just watching the video as well.
